Furman Engage

National Survey of Student Engagement

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) is designed to provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college. Survey items represent empirically confirmed "good practices" in undergraduate education.

Samples of 254 Furman freshmen and 199 seniors completed the on-line survey early in 2007.

Furman will use the survey data to identify opportunities to improve aspects of the educational experience - inside and outside the classroom - through changes in educational policies and practices.

The results reported here represent clusters of survey items or "benchmarks" created by NSSE to summarize five key areas of effective educational practice. Benchmark scores allow us to compare Furman's results with those of 610 other colleges and universities participating in the NSSE survey in 2007.
